Fall Home Readiness: Essential Exterior Maintenance Before the First Frost

Pro Tips to Protect Your Roof, Siding, and Outdoor Spaces Before Winter Sets In

Just like your morning coffee jolts you awake, fall home maintenance wakes your house into readiness for the long winter. At Above The Peak Construction, we help Beloit and Rock County homeowners tackle the exterior tasks that matter most this time of year. Here’s the checklist you’ll want to check off before the leaves fall…

1. Clean & Inspect Gutters

Leaves and debris clog gutters every fall. Once water backs up, it freezes—causing leaks, fascia damage, and ice dams that threaten your roof’s integrity. Clean your gutters now, check your downspouts, and make sure water flows at least 5 feet from your foundation.

2. Check Roof Flashings & Shingles

When winds whip off summer storms, shingles loosen and flashings separate. Walk your roof safely or ask a pro to inspect vulnerable areas—step flashings, ridge caps, and around chimneys or roof dodges. Replace any missing or curled shingles now to avoid leaks when the snow hits.

3. Seal Cracks & Caulk Trim

Cold air sneaking in around exterior trim and windows doesn’t just chill your home—it invites moisture and wood rot. Do a quick walk-around and caulk any gaps where siding meets windows, doors, fascia, and porch beams.

4. Prep Exterior Wood (Siding, Decks, Porches)

Wood swells and shrinks with moisture. Apply a fresh coat of sealant or stain on exposed wood—not only is it prettier, it's guarded against mold, winter moisture, and freeze damage. Pro tip: use a deck/porch cleaner before sealing!

5. Test Exterior Lighting & Outlets

Shorter days mean lights burn longer. Make sure all exterior lighting works, replace burnt-out bulbs, and inspect any GFCI-protected outlets—especially if you’ll plug in holiday lights or exterior heaters later in the season.

6. Mulch & Prune Shrubs

Plants act as exterior defense: mulch protects roots, and pruning prevents limbs from scraping siding or causing wind damage. Clean out garden beds and apply fresh mulch to protect perennials and foundation plantings from freeze–thaw cycles.

7. Schedule a Roof or Siding Pro Check

Want peace of mind before the snow flies? Schedule an exterior inspection now. Whether it’s roofing, siding, or exterior carpentry, this is your last chance to catch issues before cold weather freezes the timeline (and your budget).
